PLA
Polylactic Acid

The world's most printed material. Biodegradable, easy-going, and available in hundreds of formulations. Where every 3D printing journey begins.

Why PLA is where everyone starts

Derived from renewable resources like corn starch and sugarcane, PLA prints at low temperatures and rarely warps — the most forgiving material in the FDM ecosystem. Modern variants have dramatically expanded its capabilities.

PLA+ formulations offer 30–50% better impact resistance than standard PLA while maintaining all ease-of-use benefits. Silk PLA produces mirror-like metallic finishes with no post-processing.

Applications

  • Prototyping and concept models for design validation
  • Decorative objects, figurines, and miniatures
  • Educational and classroom printing projects
  • Consumer products in non-structural applications
  • Artistic pieces using silk, marble, or wood composite PLA

Limitations to know

  • Low heat resistance — softens around 60°C (HDT)
  • Brittle vs. PETG or ABS — snaps under impact
  • Absorbs moisture over time — store with desiccant
  • Degrades under prolonged UV without coating
